Thankfully, life isn't all about work. There are times that are just for relaxing. For enjoying visits with Grandpa. We'll worry about the sun pipes at some point but for today, we are just going to enjoy our time together.
Have a meal out together.
Take a walk together.
Enjoy the wonderful season of fall. It will be over all too quickly.
And it's a pretty nice view from up here.
It looks much different...
...than it did around the same time last year. We have so much to be thankful for.
All too soon, it's time to say goodbye. And that means.......
Sun Pipes. Day 2.
Matt was chosen to go up this time. He's younger, stronger, slightly more agile and ahem, somewhat lighter, making him the perfect candidate. Sorry Matt, sometimes those things can work against you. "There ain't much to you but you're wiry and I don't know but the wiry ones can work the hardest." Haha Any guesses where that line is from? *Hint* My friends in the Maritimes should know this!! ;-)
It was still a difficult job.
The domes have to be screwed on from the outside. No more working from the safe side of the roof and it was such an awkward angle to work at.
After an hour or so of uncomfortable work, Matt is finished and you would think the worst is behind us, right?
Wrong!!
See that gap just off to the left by the weatherstripping? The one that you can fit your whole hand through? I see it too, I just wish I didn't. It turns out that the pipe that joins the dome to the house has to be inserted before the dome can be put on. From the top!! Yup, the whole thing has to be taken off and the pipe put in first. Now you would think that maybe we should have known that but the directions certainly didn't say anything about putting the pipe in first. Perhaps they assume that you should just know what order these things go in. After all, who would attempt to install a sun pipe in their house who hasn't done it at least a 100 times already? The ironic part is that with the time change, it is mostly dark when the guys get home from work, so there is already dew on the roof making it unsafe to do the necessary changes during the week. It all has to wait until this weekend to fix and this weekend the forecast is calling for the possibility of snow.
Of course it is.
Well, we can get worked up about it or simply wait and do the work this weekend, weather permitting, of course. There is still plenty of other work to do in the meantime.
The dirt here is still too high and hydro won't connect us until it is lowered.
Matt gets to work spreading the dirt out.
And we had another delivery...
I guess that's why they call it sheetrock. Why do we call it drywall then? Things that make you go hmmmm.
Ready to be installed.
First things first, the ceilings have to be put in so the insulation has somewhere to sit.
Phil begins putting the insulation in. It's starting to look like a bedroom!!
So the sun pipe saga continues. It is what it is. If we ever have the opportunity to install sun pipes anywhere again (hahahahahahaha), we will know how it's done. Live and learn, right? We have so much to be thankful for that we can hardly complain when things don't always go smoothly the first time we try them (even if we do secretly hope for that). This whole building project has been one learning experience after another. What I am the most thankful for is that we are doing it together. Learning together and just being together. The days may be long but the years go by fast and I want to savour every little bit of this. The good and the bad. All of it! This time will be over so quickly, life will carry on and soon enough, our family dynamics may change (Lordwilling) and this season of us being altogether in one house will be over. So I want to enjoy all of it and not let any part of it rob us of the joy we have.
Not even the sun pipes.
And let us not be weary in well doing: for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not. As we have therefore opportunity, let us do good unto all men, especially unto them who are of the household of faith.
Galations 6:9-10
